Background
The Clumber Spaniel has always been a breed with few individuals. During the 1980's and 90's
discussions started on how to broaden the breeding platform. One of several choises was to cross breed, something that has been done in many breeds.
After some discussions on what breed to choose, it was suggested that we used an English Cocker Spaniel, of working type.
2001 the Clumber Spaniel klubb sent a formal request to SKK to mate a Clumber Spaniel bitch with an English Cocker Spaniel dog, of working type.
Purpose
The breed development project was initiated to simulate and support breeders in their work at broadening the gene pool and to reduce the inbreeding factor. And after this, continue to breed physical and mentally healthy Clumber Spaniels. SKK approved the application on the 22 of August, 2001.
This project is a co-operation between the breeders and the breed club.
Implementation
The cross breeding project was carried out in november 2002, by mating the Clumber Spaniel bitch SU(u)Ch Don´s Yours Truly, äg. Karin Brostam, with the English Cocker Spaniel dog of working type, SJ(j)Ch Småviltjägarens Oryx, äg. Jörgen Sandberg.
Karin Brostam and Lotta Olsson breed this litter.
The first generation was born on the 8th of January 2003, 5 dogs and 5 bitches.
Only the best individuals in this litter was to be breed from.
Evaluation
All individuals in this litter were to be hip and elbow x-rayed, eye examined and preferably mentally described. This, so that relevant evaluation facts could be collected.
It is very important that the people who purchase a cross breed puppy is aware of this project and everything that is planned around it.
Registrations
The offsprings in this litter were to be registrated with an official pedigree, in SKK's x-registrer as the breed Cocker spaniel/Clumber spaniel.
Clumber again?
When an individual from the cross breed litter, shows Clumber standard, it can be re-registered as a Clumber Spaniel. An application for this has to be sent to SKK and they will sent two show judges to evaluate this individual and compare it to the Clumber breed standard. If the judges can give the dog not less than a second price, the dog can be re-registered as a Clumber Spaniel.

The second generation of the cross breed Clumber Spaniel/Cocker Spaniel is born. The first litter was born on 12th of december 2005 at Kennel Spindelns, 2 dogs and 5 bitches.

A Clumber always have liver pigmentation so this is a step in the right direction. Approximately half of the dogs are white with small orange markings and half are orange roan in various degrees. Over all they have good bone structure, they are well built with good Clumber proportions and good angulations. Even mentally, the offspring’s in the second generation show to be more of a Clumber than in the first generation. Their owners think of them as calm, willing to please and are over all very content with them.
